Why did my child’s well visit get charged as a well visit and a sick visit?

During your child’s well visit, we focus on preventive care: growth and development; nutrition, sleep and healthy habits; vaccines and screenings; questions about keeping your child healthy.

Sometimes, families also bring up a new medical concern that requires additional evaluation, such as: ear pain, rashes, ongoing headaches, anxiety concerns, medication questions or adjustments, a new illness or injury.

We are always happy to address these concerns when time allows – because we’d rather help your child today than have you make a separate trip back to the office.

However, when a significant new concern is evaluated and treated during a well visit, insurance companies may process that portion of the visit as a separate acute (sick) visit, which can result in an additional copay, deductible, or coinsurance charge.

Please know:

  • This is determined by insurance billing rules, not by Pediatric Associates of Richmond
  • Our goal is always to provide the care your child needs while making the best use of your family’s time
  • If we’re unable to fully address a complex concern during a well visit, we may recommend scheduling a dedicated follow-up appointment so we can give it the attention it deserves
